Dubbed by his fans as "Mzee wa Commercial" meaning a successful artist in the hip hop business, this success has popularised him all over East Africa.Born in the southern town of Mtwara, He started to rap in the late 1990's with his friends, this made him to write his own lyrics and recorded a song titled "My Girlfriend" with the CBM crew.
When CBM crew split up, AY [Ambwene Yesaya] went for a solo career path and recorded his first song titled "Kila Siku" at Sound Crafters Studio in Dar-es-salaam. At that time he also joined the rap group East Coast Team and starred alongside other famous rappers TID, Crazy GK and Jay Moe in the most successful hip hop movie in Tanzania titled "Girl Friend", a film about life and music.
He went on to break the Bongo Flava scene with Party joints like "Raha Tu [Remix]" featuring the Late Complex [R.I.P], "Machoni kama Watu” featuring Bongo Flava songstress Lady Jay Dee, "Binadamu" featuring Ugandan R&B crooner Maurice Kirya with two albums under his belt titled Raha Kamili (2003) and Hisia Zangu (2005).
His collaborations paid off when his track 'Binadamu' featuring Uganda’s Maurice Kirya was nominated for the Kora Awards in 2005. Lately, his latest tracks "Kutoka kwa AY" and "Mademu Wote" have been on regular TV and Radio rotation.
